Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a must-visit for animal lovers and curious travelers alike. Established in 1975, it serves as a sanctuary for elephants in need.
Meet the adorable baby elephants—Vijaya, Neela, Kadira, Mathlee, and Kumari—who found refuge here after being abandoned. These little ones rely on their caretakers, as they can’t survive in the wild until they’re nearly 5 years old.
But it’s not just the babies; injured and maimed adult elephants also find solace at the orphanage. With a current population of 93 majestic pachyderms, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage offers a heartwarming glimpse into the lives of these incredible creatures

Kitesurfing on the West Coast (May–September)
The west coast of Sri Lanka is a kitesurfer’s paradise, even though the sport is relatively new here. Negombo stands out as a hotspot, thanks to its abundance of kite rentals offered by various water sports providers.
Best kitesurfing conditions for beginners can be found in Negombo from January through March. But for the more seasoned riders, the real excitement begins from May to September. During these months, the southwest winds sweep across the west coast, creating high shore breaks and powerful seas—ideal for adrenaline-fueled kitesurfing.
Picture yourself gliding over the waves off the Kalpitiya peninsula, where consistent 24/7 winds promise extended hours of exhilarating rides. And don’t worry about rocks or hazardous corals; if you happen to take an unexpected dip, the wind will blow you safely back to shore.

Windsurfing on the East Coast (April–September)
When the windsurfing season on the southwest coast winds down, head to the east coast. Arugam Bay takes center stage as the most popular water sports destination in this part of Sri Lanka.
Imagine catching the wind from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. as you windsurf across the turquoise waters. Beginners will find their sweet spot at Elephant Rock, just 4 km south of Arugam Bay. Further north, off the coast of Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches, you’ll discover another excellent windsurfing alternative.
Keep in mind that the eastern coastal belt is still developing compared to the southwestern and southern coastal areas, so accommodation options and water sports facilities may be somewhat limited.
